Calcific Metamorphosis with Pathological Root Resorption in Permanent Teeth: Morphohistometric Evaluation of Two Cases International Journal of Morphology
Fonseca,Gabriel M; Fonseca,Miguel M.
Calcific Metamorphosis (CM) is a pulpal response to dental trauma characterized by a deposition of hard tissue within the canal space. A tooth with CM usually presents a discoloration and a partial or total obliteration of the pulp canal space, and its vital pulp tests and symptoms are difficult. Since pulp necrosis cannot be supposed even the negative responses, the periradicular status is the only reliable criterion. Two permanent teeth diagnosed as CM and pathological root resorption, extracted from two males (22 and 53 years of age) due to severe mobility were prepared and sectioned for histological and histometrical evaluation. Images were captured, processed and measured in a total mapping of each specimen with software Pinnacle Studio 9.4® (Pinnacle...

Comparison of Two Different Methods of Average Working Length Determination in Second Molars and Premolars International Journal of Morphology
Rodríguez-Niklitschek,Cynthia; Cantín,Mario; Oporto,V. G. H.
Within the procedures involved in a successful endodontic treatment is the working length (WL) determination. The root canal end must be detected accurately, and a precise control of the WL must be maintained. There are several methods to determine WL. Researchers have published the average teeth length (ATL) to the human permanent dentition. These measurements are used as an anatomical reference. If the WL is evaluated using a radiographic image, it is accepted as clinical success if the limit of the canal sealing is 1 mm coronal to the root apex. One method to determine WL is based in substract 1 mm to ATL. Another method widely used, assert to achieve a more precise WL determination, through the use of an electronic apex locator (AL). Nevertheless,...

Configuration of Canal System in the Mesiobuccal Root of Maxillary First Molars International Journal of Morphology
Spalding,Marianne; Rezende,Karla Mayra; Silveira,Maria Claudia Garcia; Valera,Márcia Carneiro; Leite,Horácio Faig.
Knowledge on internal dental morphology is extremely important to the correct execution of the treatment and modeling of root canals. The aim of the present study was to analyze, "in vitro", the configuration of the canal system in the mesial root of 180 maxillary first molars obtained from a Brazilian sample. The teeth diaphanized in order to confirm the presence of the MB2 canal and to determine the internal anatomy. Only in 41 % of the teeth the orifice of MB2 canal emerged from the pulp chamber floor. Among teeth two apical foramina were found in 23.3 %, a single apical foramen was observed in 15,5 % and three apical foramina were present in 2,2 %. Considering the hole sample, the MB2 canal was observed in 65.4 %, merged with the MB1 or branching from...

Effect of different methods of sterilization on the inactivation of bacterial endotoxin (LPS) in endodontic files BJM
Silva,Raquel Assed Bezerra da; Leonardo,Mário Roberto; Faccioli,Lúcia Helena; Medeiros,Alexandra Ivo; Nelson-Filho,Paulo.
This study evaluated the presence of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in endodontic files after in vitro contamination with E. coli LPS and sterilization in dry heat or wet heat, with or without previous immersion in a Ca(OH)2 suspension. LPS was quantified using the Kinetic QCL TM test and data were analyzed statistically by the t-test. LPS was quantified only in the contaminated group, not submitted to any immersion or sterilization procedure (0.262±0.1296 endotoxin units/mL) (p=0.0003). In conclusion, both wet heat and dry heat sterilization were effective in inactivating LPS without the need of previous immersion of the files in a Ca(OH)2 suspension.

Study of Prevalence of Internal Resorption in Periapical Radiography of Anteriors Permanents Tooth International Journal of Morphology
Araújo,Lorena Cássia Gueiros de; Lins,Carol Vasconcelos; Lima,Georgina Agnelo de; Travassos,Rosana Maria Coelho; Lins,Carla Cabral dos Santos Accioly.
The aim of this study was to evaluate, by the use of clinical and radiographic records, the prevalence of internal resorption in anterior permanent teeth of patients from the Clinic of Specialization in Endodontics of Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil; related to the period of September of 2001 to June of 2007. 888 medical records from the archives of the clinic were analyzed. Among them 232 referred to anterior teeth. The presence and the location of the resorption were radiographically observed. The obtained results verified that the internal resorption was prevalent in 2.16% of the cases, with 0.86% located in coronal region, 0.44% in root region and 0.86% in both regions. We concluded that, despite of being a pathology of low incidence, the...

Study of the Internal Morphology of the Mesiobuccal Root of Upper First Permanent Molar Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography International Journal of Morphology
Campos Netto,Petronio de Albuquerque; Lins,Carla Cabral dos Santos Accioly; Lins,Carol Vasconcelos; Lima,Georgina Agnelo; Gomes Frazão,Marco Antônio.
The aim of this study was to investigate and classify the internal morphology of the mesiobuccal root of upper first permanent molar, using the cone beam computed tomography. A total of 60 first permanent molars, not healthy and with intact pulp cavity, belonging to the Postgraduate dentistry bank, underwent the computed tomography. Axial images of each tooth were analyzed, and results showed that according to the number of conduits, 21 specimens (35%) had single conduit and 39 exhibited two conduits (65%). In reference to the types of internal configuration most commonly found according to Vertucci classification; type I (single channel that extends from the pulp chamber to the apex) was the most frequent (35%), followed by type II (two separate canals...
